ABOUT THE SOUTH CAROLINA UPSTATE PARALEGAL ASSOCIATION:

The South Carolina Upstate Paralegal Association ("SCUPA") was founded on January 9, 1979, in Greenville, South Carolina, to promote the paralegal profession and provide a forum for continuing legal education for paralegals throughout Upstate South Carolina.

For more than four decades, education has remained a cornerstone of SCUPA’s mission. At each monthly luncheon meeting, members benefit from presentations by experienced legal professionals and subject-matter experts. These educational programs provide valuable insight, enhance professional knowledge, and help paralegals strengthen their expertise. In addition to monthly programming, SCUPA proudly sponsors an annual legal education seminar designed to further advance professional development.

As an affiliate of the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), SCUPA provides its members with timely information regarding developments within the paralegal profession nationwide. Updates on court decisions, administrative rulings, bar association initiatives, and professional guidelines from across the country ensure that our members remain informed about evolving national standards and trends. In March 1990, SCUPA partnered with NALA to administer the Certified Paralegal Examination in South Carolina for the first time — a significant milestone in advancing professional certification within the state.

On the state level, SCUPA was a founding member of the South Carolina Alliance of Legal Assistant Associations, established in 1989 to promote and strengthen the paralegal profession across South Carolina. Through collaboration and leadership, SCUPA members continue to support efforts aimed at enhancing professional recognition and advancing the role of paralegals within the legal community.

SCUPA is also deeply committed to community engagement. Over the years, we have participated in and supported numerous civic and charitable initiatives, including:

From its original twelve charter members, SCUPA’s membership has grown steadily, reflecting both the expansion of the paralegal profession and our continued dedication to education, advocacy, and professional excellence
